I heard some rumors that the burgers here were pretty darn good so I was inclined to select only the biggest, fattest burger that I could put together. I choose the pound heart attack with bacon, mushrooms, and roasted garlic mixed in, topped with blue cheese crumbles, and served with a side of garlic fries. The concept of having the ingredients mixed in is kind of novel, but it's really hard to differentiate the flavors from everything else that's going on in the burger. However, the real novelty revealed itself when I cut a cross-section of the sandwich only to find that the patty itself was over 2 epic inches thick, and counting the blue cheese, was well on its way to a massive 3 inches! The large plate of fries were excellent and had tons of fresh garlic and cilantro covering each piece.
While they make a mean burger, I unfortunately have one or two major complaints. First off, the place is almost impossible to find without the help of GPS to get you in the general vicinity, and a few phone calls to finally find your way in. Boomerangs is located in the middle of a group of nondescript buildings and is completely invisible from the street. The only indication that there is actually a restaurant here is the badly faded, low-contrast painted mural on the side of the building, which is mostly blocked by the building in front of it. Coupled with the one-way streets with no turning points, it took me nearly half an hour to find the restaurant after I had arrived in the area. Second, let's face it, service here is slow. Like, molasses slow. Like, watch the weeds grow slow. The bulk of our admittedly large group had arrived at 1pm, only to have our order finally taken a 2pm, and the last of our burgers delivered nearly an hour after that. I had arrived when it was bright out and it was getting dark by the time we left. The fact of the matter is that a simply burger meal took nearly 3 hours to complete. Our group managed to entertain themselves for the most part, but it is still an unacceptable amount of time to wait for a burger, even one of this caliber.
Overall, I really enjoyed the food at Boomerangs. The overall package needs an overhaul, but if you can weather the wait, you'll be rewarded with a delicious burger of massive proportions. However, if you're in a hurry, don't even bother because you will hardly even see a waiter come around to take your order, even during off-peak hours. They do have a dog-friendly patio so your pet can keep you company while you wait. If you're lucky, you'll wait only about half the time, but even then you may find yourself desperate enough for some food that you'll just cross the street and find yourself at McDonalds, saving you a huge amount of time and money, and filling your belly with marginal, yet satisfying, eats.
