I actually wanted to give this place 3.5 but couldn't. This place is decent for the raves from everyone and Guy Fieri from Diners, Drive-ins and Dives ( a show on the food network). The patio seating is across the street and they have their own small parking lot reserved for just El Indio customers.
The taquitos are tasty and the carne asada is as well but I would rather go to my locally favorite hole in the wall place to eat mexican food unless I am in El Indio's area.
On Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives recommendation I decided that today was a good day to give El Indio, a San Diego classic, a try. History courses through the veins of this Mexican eatery, where the founder built the first tortilla machine in San Diego. To this day, it still cranks out hundreds of fresh tortillas every hour.
My friend and I decided to share the beef enchilada and beef tamale combo as well as the grilled chicken supreme quesadilla. Everything at El Indio is made to order so it takes up to 15 minutes to prepare your order, but when you finally receive it, you won't be disappointed. The tamale and enchilada were very tasty and smothered with cheese and red sauce, and came with sides of rice, beans, and "a few chips". The 5 chips were freshly fried and I only wished that I could have a few more, especially because I was splitting the meal with my friend. The quesadilla was delicious and filled to its edges with piping hot, melted cheese and tender chicken. Our supreme quesadilla even arrived with sides of guacamole, sour cream, and salsa ranchera.
When you come to El Indio, be sure to come hungry because this is some seriously stuffy (as in you'll be seriously stuffed by the time you're ready to hobble out) food. I could barely move after finishing every last bean on the plate, washed down by some cool, refreshing horchata. If you've got your dog with you, there's even a private outdoor patio area across the street where you can dine with your pal at your side.
