I was spoiled with an Erik's location down the street for my house as a kid. I was a super picky eater, and Erik's Abbot's Habit was the only sandwich I would voluntarily eat. Ever.
This downtown San Jose location isn't quite as awesome as I remember. The decor isn't as turn-of-the-century cozy, and there seems to be a little more bread and a little less of the sprouts that make Erik's sandwiches special. However there are clean bathrooms, parking validation and plenty of seating both inside and out. Good for a quick, on-the-go meal that doesn't stuff you to the gills.
My girlfriend and I were in town for the Sharks vs Ducks and needed to get some grub before the game. We didn’t exactly feel like getting ripped off at the Pavilion so we walked around town for a little bit to see what we were working with. She spotted an Erik’s and wanted to try it since she hadn’t been back since she was a kid.
We shared an Abbott’s Habit (roast beef) and a Sea Dog (tuna melt), which were both served with a pickle spear and orange slice. Both were hot sandwiches which were quite welcome before heading into a place where a parka is necessary. The portion sizes aren’t huge, but just enough to tide us over during the game. I could have definitely used more meat.
They’re more expensive than Subway, but the quality is worth it and all of the ingredients tasted pretty fresh. I do think they could have done a little better with the “sides” but they weren’t a deal breaker. There’s a few tables outside where you can enjoy your sandwich with your pup too. If you’re into the roar of the airplanes overhead landing at SJC nearby, then these are a great option too. Overall, a tasty and satisfying sandwich but that didn’t blow my mind.
