Love this place! It's a place that both dogs and people can truly enjoy. The greenery and ocean views are gorgeous, there are both paved paths and sandy areas for walking depending on how adventurous you're feeling, as well as the occasional bench for reading or resting on. Plenty of parking too.
You'll meet lots of really friendly folks with sweet and well-behaved pets. It must be a popular place for dog walkers, judging by the mobs of happy pups that Doggie kept trying to run away with!
I'd recommend a visit to Fort Funston even if you don't have a dog with you. It's hard to walk away from this place without a smile on your face. :) <--(see?!)
The weather outside has been generally frightful and my sister's dog, Doggie, hasn't gotten a chance to run around in a while. I brought Doggie with me to pick up Deb L. from the train station and we all headed over to Fort Funston to get in a morning walk.
There were hundreds of dogs and their owners out and Doggie got in a pretty good walk. Just about every dog was off leash and everybody was super friendly. The views over the cliff are spectacular and the whole area reminds me of La Jolla Cliffs and Blacks Beach in San Diego, but much chillier. Doggie loved the unrestricted open space and the ability to play with all of the other dogs. A huge bonus is how clean the area is and all of the owners were picking up after their dogs.
We went for maybe a mile or so before turning around because the rain was starting to come down. Doggie was a bit disappointed and decided to run off with a big pack of dogs so I had to chase her down. Such are the perils of going off leash, but I can't think of a better place to do it. It's a great place to go almost every day, but just beware of all of the sand you're bound to collect along the walk. I can't wait to go back and neither can Doggie!
