After a heavy Mexican meal on a scorchingly hot day, there's nothing like cooling off with small serving of Italian ice cream. While the lunch compartment of my stomach may have been full, the dessert car of this foodie train always has room. Luckily, just down the street stood a classic San Diego gelateria.
My choices of the day were my ever favorite gianduia (a chocolate hazelnut flavor) and their mocha rum crunch. The gelato was silky smooth and possessed some extremely strong, bold flavors. As always, the gianduia was decadent and the crunch of the mocha rum flavor added a new dimension to the otherwise velvety landscape in my biodegradable gelato bowl. Their gelato offerings were incredible, but my only complaint would be that they simply could not fit enough in my small serving size!
Gelato Vero Caffe has adapted the now ubiquitous practice of selling their servings by the ounce. With the price tag of $0.63 per ounce, this is definitely not a cheap treat. While they serve up a deliciously creamy confection, I don't think their product justifies the cost, especially when gelaterias like Mondo Gelato sell it for significantly less per ounce. If you're in the Mission Hills area, definitely drop in for a taste. The dog-friendly tables outside are perfect for enjoying your gelato on a hot San Diego day. However, be cautious of the potentially high cost of your treat because you won't have any control over how much your scooper decides to pack into your particular serving.
