Pizza Port Solana Beach

Located in beautiful Solana Beach, Pizza Port is a favorite amongst locals. I've been looking forward to checking them out for the longest time and finally had the opportunity to try some of their famously tasty brews and crafted pizza pies when a buddy came to visit from the Bay Area.

Our party started out with a pitcher of the Toronado Brown, a very dark brew. I normally don't like anything this dark as it tends to be too bitter for me, but the Toronado was quite nice and very refreshing during the brisk evening.

We ordered a large pizza Roma which came topped with several kinds of meats and vegetables, a "works"-style if you will, as well as a basket of their hot wings. Each slice was piled so high with toppings that I was forced to eat it with a knife and fork, a method that's blasphemous for most pizza aficionados but necessary to get the job done here. The pizza was very tasty and delicious though I felt that the bottom of the crust could have been more firm. The hot wings apparently only come in one temperature, insanity. These things remind me of the suicide wings at Callahan's and the beads of sweat came rolling down my brow as soon as the chicken touched my tongue. The heat only added to the flavor and the beer went a long way in alleviating the burning.

Overall, I really enjoyed the experience at Pizza Port. The unpretentious and fun atmosphere, along with great company and food, really made this a place that you really could come anytime. Seating on busy evenings might be tricky so be sure to come early or you just might get stuck with standing room only! This is especially important if you've got your dog with you but if you're lucky you'll be able to snag one of the dog-friendly tables on the patio.
