It was my friend's birthday weekend and we wanted to check out somewhere new for brunch so we headed to Prepkitchen in La Jolla. By the same proprietors as Whisknladle down the street, Prepkitchen is known for making just about everything in house and I was really excited to give them a try.
I ordered the half tuna melt with butternut squash soup, served with leafy greens, chips, and pickle (all home made) and my friend ordered the beef hash. The tuna melt was excellent and was irresistible when dipped into and enjoyed with the soup. The portion sizes weren't huge, but totally satisfying. My friend's hash was served like an open-faced and topped with poached eggs which oozed golden goodness when broken. The combination of flavors were excellent though the portion sized was still on the small side.
Prepkitchen is located in a tiny little plaza with plenty of dog-friendly outdoor seating and offers free Bird Rock Coffee, as well as a free olive bar (it's more of just a single jar). While not a coffee connoisseur myself, my friend assured me that it was some high quality stuff and I enjoyed my fair share of the house-brined olives. It was the last day of the Prepkitchen counter-service as we know it and they're re-opening in a few days with full service!
