Sol Food is my favorite restaurant in town and when it comes to a hearty meal at a great price, there really is no substitute. The main location was closed for renovations so my buddy and I headed over to their itty bitty location on Fourth Street for some of their famous chicken.
I got their top selling chicken thighs served with rice, beans, plantains, and salad. For less than $10, this meal can't be beaten. They simply do the basics unbelievably well and the entire city keeps coming back for more. They've even got a single, lonely table on the corner of 4th and Lincoln for those enjoying their meals with their best fuzzy and furry friends. There's also some bar seating outside too.
Lately, Sol Food has been a victim of its own success by expanding a bit too quickly, compromising the food quality and overall experience. Their pop-up location on Fourth Street had seen its share of scaling problems. When my friends and I went the other night, we had no less than 9-10 major mistakes in our order, which annoyed our party, but also annoyed the Sol Food staff. Given that you order a few doors down and they bring you your dinner packed securely in wasteful to-go boxes, it makes logistics terribly complicated. They've got to manage this transition correctly or the whole operation and built-up goodwill could come tumbling down. I will certainly be back, but I really hope they get their act together and bring back the larger portions instead of the smaller bites that have been served lately. This particular experience was almost perfect, but there are definitely places to improve.
